A wedding set up on a sandy beach in the sun. Text reads: Destination weddings, what you should know

Travelling abroad for a destination wedding can be an exciting time, but it also requires extra planning. So if you’re headed overseas to celebrate with a loved one here are a few things to think about before you set off.

Ask yourself the following questions;

Have you sent in your RSVP?

There’s nothing worse than travelling miles for a wedding when they aren’t expecting you and haven’t prepared for your arrival…

Have you got the required vaccines?

Do you need to get a visa?

Is your passport valid for the date of travel?

Do you have a garnet bag to keep your wedding outfit safe and wrinkle-free during the trip?

Do you have a backup plan for if the airline loses your luggage or it gets delayed?

I recommend travelling with your special items in a carry-on case, this includes medicines and items that hold sentimental value.

Is the clothing you’re packing weather-appropriate?

Is the clothing you’re planning to wear to the wedding in line with the dress code or theme?

Is the clothing you’re packing culturally appropriate?

If you’re visiting a place that has strict rules on clothing, are you sure what you’ve packed isn’t going to offend the locals? If you’re unsure, do some research before you start to pack.

Have you researched local traditions and customs?

Do you need to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, swimwear or a beach towel?

It’s sometimes easy to forget that even though you are traveling to attend a wedding you’ll likely be doing other things while you’re there. Make sure you’re packed and ready for a mini holiday.

Have you packed your gift or card?

Most times when couples have their weddings abroad they don’t expect a gift since you’ve already spent quite a bit on the travel costs, however, it is always a good custom to bring a card to congratulate the happy couple.

If you decide to give a gift anyway, perhaps consider something lightweight and small. After all, it's not only your case it needs to fit into… The bride and groom will need to bring it home.

Have you got the right kind of travel insurance?

Don’t get the most basic one you can find. If you’re travelling far make sure your insurance covers things such as; flight cancellations or extreme delays, medical emergencies, lost luggage etc…

Have you packed your invitation?

Do you know what time you're expected to arrive at the ceremony, reception etc..?

Have you alerted your bank you’re going abroad?

This is an easy way to avoid extra costs and general spending issues while you’re away.

I also recommend taking some local currency in cash for small purchases and tips.

How are you staying connected while you’re away?

Is your phone set up for international roaming? Alternatively, you can purchase a local SIM card when you arrive.

Do you have useful apps downloaded to your phone ahead of time?

Depending on the phone plan you have, downloading apps on the go can be tricky. Have you got apps such as Uber, Google Maps, and Google Translate on your phone before you travel?

Have you got confirmation of your accommodation?

I recommend having this in paper form just in case your phone dies or has trouble connecting to local Wi-Fi at the time of check-in.

It’s often more convenient to stay in the same hotel as other guests so you can share transport to and from the airport and wedding venue so it might be worth asking where people are staying before booking.

Is the local tap water safe to drink?

Have you thought about packing an emergency kit?

This should include items like band-aids, painkillers (for the morning after), hand sanitiser, period products etc…

You might also want to pack a face mask. Some places still have strict Covid-19 rules.

Does your phone have enough storage to take lots of pictures or do you need to bring a camera?

If you ask yourself these questions before you set off to attend a destination wedding you're sure to have a smooth and enjoyable trip having thought of everything.

Enjoy your trip!
